Understanding Ontario's Care Funding Landscape

Direct Payments vs. Tax Credits

It’s important to distinguish between Income Replacement (like EI Compassionate Care, which pays you monthly) and Tax Credits (like the Canada Caregiver Credit, which reduces your tax bill at year-end). Our tool identifies both.

Post-Hospital Support

If your loved one is recovering from a stroke, surgery, or accident, you may qualify for time-limited Home and Community Care services (funded PSWs) to aid recovery. This is separate from long-term private care.

The "Gateway" Document

Many significant credits require the person you care for to have an approved Disability Tax Credit (T2201) certificate on file with the CRA. If they have a severe impairment, getting this signed by a doctor is your first step.

Veterans & Special Programs

Veterans Affairs Canada offers robust support, including the Caregiver Recognition Benefit, which pays over $1,000 monthly tax-free to the caregiver of a veteran with a service-related disability.

Common Questions About Caregiver Funding

Direct salary payments are rare. However, the Canada Caregiver Credit (CCC) and the Ontario Caregiver Amount work as non-refundable tax credits.

The Disability Tax Credit (T2201) is a federal tax credit for people with severe and prolonged impairments. It acts as a gateway for many other benefits.

You can offset private costs using the Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit, the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC), and the Family-Managed Home Care program.
